First of all is simplicity. Hats off to you if you're thinking that Asian flair and Asian simplicity are two different things. You're right, they are! Asian design uses space well and is uncluttered. Accents are allowed to stand alone and be appreciated.
Second is calming influences. Asian design is grounded in nature's calm serenity. Bamboo is a great example. Sticks of bamboo, tied together are both simple and calm. We employ two different urns in our living room, one is filled with artificial grass and the other with painted branches. Both are simple and calm and the Asian influence is communicated through the urns.
Last is the focus on the family. In Asian culture, family relationships are cherished. Elders are always respected and revered. One way relationships are demonstrated through Asian design is symbolism. The circle representing the Universe and Heaven, the square Earth and the triangle man. Incorporating all of these into a design is creating "The Essential Triangle."
Capturing all of these elements in an asymmetrical grouping is the most interesting principle in Asian design. So how do you embrace Asian design without a whole living room makeover?
How about starting with a bamboo picture frame, or two?

The colors are simple, the patterns are not busy and a picture frame is always best used holding a picture of those closest to you. If you want to tinker with a bit of Asian design in your living room, start small with a bamboo picture frame.
