Family rooms can be a bit of a challenge. Our family room decorating ideas are just what the doctor ordered. The family room is functional, well-traveled, and obviously a room for kids and adults alike. Creating a balance and an uncluttered look is difficult, but definitely doable. Todd and Jen's family room decorating ideas coming up...

You can afford to let loose a little bit with the wall colors in your family room. Lighter greens, gold, bright red? Why not? This is a family room after all. It should be fun!
If light and airy is what you're looking for think green pastels or light yellows. This works especially well if you've got some bigger windows. Slipcovered furniture and white cabinetry closes out this look.
Another way to go is to use your lighter colors as a nice neutral base and go crazy with brightly colored area rugs and furniture.
A family room can take on a masculine tone, as well. Think lots of wood, combined with leather furniture positioned around an entertainment center or armoire as the focal point. If you have enough space, break off a secondary area just for games with a multi-use game table. Position that near a bar area and voila, Man Room!
A great way to pull together your family room is to incorporate a central theme.
If your family room is place where the family watches television and movies, then go for the theater approach. There are great reclining sectional units designed just for the media room. Couple these with your flat screen TV, surround sound system, and walls decorated with framed movie posters and you've got a great place for movies. Don't forget the popcorn machine in the corner.
That's just one example. If the family room is more all purpose, where your family hangs out to talk, play games and watch some TV then a casual feel may be a better idea. Big comfy couches, a wide coffee table and lots of color. Family photos on the walls are a great accent. How about this...let every member of your family choose one accent, either for the walls or tables. Now that's family room decorating!
Hope these family room decorating ideas are working for you so far. Got a few more...
Family rooms are for thinking big! Get the fireplace going, flip on the TV, grab your softest throw and curl up in that oversized club chair.
Pull your chairs in around that big round coffee table, dump out the box and start putting together that jigsaw puzzle.
Fire up the big screen, the surround sound and put in the latest DVD for a great evening of family fun.
See, those are all examples of thinking big with your family room decorating ideas.
Oh yeah, the massive entertainment center for your flat screen, too.
Most folks we know who've finished a basement, have done this for more family space. Why not? Makes sense. There are lots of questions to answer when planning out your finished basement design.
- Do I want specific rooms for different activities (kid room, media room, collectibles room)
- Do I want to unite all rooms into a specific theme or give each room its own personality?
- Do I want bedrooms downstairs or will I just be creating lots of family fun space?
Answering these questions up front will send you down the right path to creating a great finished basement. Here's a great family room decorating idea for your basement.
One strategy that we've seen work well has been setting aside one room aside for the kids, complete with seating, all their toys, TV and DVD's, then opening up the rest of the space for family fun. A good friend of ours has a main family room in his finished basement, complete with flat screen and leather couches on risers, a pool table, his prized collection of Hot Wheels(R) and a bar right in the middle. It's a great place to hang out, enjoy a fine beverage and reminisce.
You can afford to be a bit more carefree with your family room decorating ideas. This is a room especially designed with the family in mind. It's supposed to be warm, comfortable, and inviting. Buying the most expensive pieces of furniture won't necessarily gain you anything. Do go for quality due to extra traffic this room receives, but be extravagant somewhere else in the house.
Tie your accents back to your family. Get everyone involved. Be creative displaying family photos. Show off the kids' crafts from school. Pay tribute to vacations and places you've visited.
Most of all, take these family room decorating ideas and HAVE FUN!!!!
