Great room separation anxiety...
by: Todd and Jen

Jana,

Without a photo or two to get an idea of what you're working with we really can't get too specific.

Here are some of the main ways that folks take an open floor pan and break it up a bit.

1-Wall colors, because a change in wall color signifies you're somewhere different than you just were

2-Area rugs, because they compartmentalize different areas of a room

3-Flooring altogether, because moving from hardwoods to carpet makes you feel like you've entered a different room.

4-Furniture placement, of which we have a good example in our living room/dining room combo. When sitting at our dining room table you see the back of our sofa. There's an ample walkway between the head chair and the sofa which sends the message that we've transitioned into another room.

One additional thing you can do along those lines are add a sofa table behind the sofa which gives an even cleaner break and creates an opportunity for more accenting.

Another is add a carpet runner to create a walkway, especially when the entire room is carpeted.

Hope we helped a little bit. Good luck!
