We love mahogany!
The key is finding a color that matches it well. The light color is creating that bare feeling so you'll definitely need to stay away from other really bland colors.
A couple colors come to mind... restrained gold (which is a muted, satiny type gold), robin's egg blue (which is a light, airy blue that goes rather well with reds - also brings the 1950's to mind), and warm neutrals (like a lighter mahogany or some orange variations).
